Dark Christmas

A mother will always want to fulfill her promises to her children. I wish I never kept my promise if keeping that promise would mean almost losing my kids. It was a promise that we will spend a Christmas in Phuket, Thailand. My girls love that place after visiting it for the first time in 2003.

During our first days, everything was so amazing--the food, the people, the beaches, the tour. But all these will never be enough for the emotional torture we encountered after the Phuket Christmas Day.

After Christmas, December 26, 2004, was supposed to be a day to relax and enjoy again. We had wonderful breakfast and the girls wanted to go swimming again. But I had a bad feeling about the abnormal “low tide.” So, I did not allow them to go swimming and said we`ll go on swimming when the water is normal again.

After about 30 minutes of staying upstairs, we heard horrible noises--big waves, people screaming, and things breaking apart. A lot of hotel guests were rushing to go upstairs. The girls were really scared. I was afraid that the waves might reach our floor.

We heard that another tsunami will hit the place but luckily, it didn`t. To cut the story short, all of us in the hotel survived the tsunami and safely went back home. But that does not end our Black Christmas story.

What keeps on haunting us are the scenes we saw from our window on that dreadful day--people fighting for their lives and asking for help. I feel so guilty that I can`t do anything to help them at that time. Worse, I feel so guilty that I never warned other people about that suspicious low tide. Many may not believe me but it surely worth the shame if some lives were saved.

Every Christmas, those scenes still haunt me. Even visiting other beaches in any part of the world gives us fear. What if that same thing happens to us again and this time, the waves will reach our floor?

I know, I can`t control what Mother Nature will do but I can prepare myself to keep my girls safe at all times. Maybe I can help people be saved, too. That`s when I started to become obsessed about predicting natural disasters. During my long-year research that I found a 2012 Contact review.
